Don’t Hang Up Your Fins! Why Florida Winter Diving is Our Best Kept Secret

Lori Sauer   Dec 01, 2025

Let’s be honest, when the air temperature in Florida dips into the 50s (or gasp the 40s!), the instinct is to grab a blanket, not a BCD.

Many “fair-weather divers” hang up their fins from December to March. But here at Space Coast Dive Center, we know a secret: Winter is often when Florida diving is at its absolute best.

While the water might be a bit chillier, the trade-off is spectacular visibility. The cooler water temperatures inhibit algae blooms and plankton growth that can cloud the water during the hot summer months. Winter often brings those crystal-clear, high-definition days on the reef that divers dream about.

How to Stay Toasty

The key to enjoying winter diving isn’t being tough; it’s being prepared. You don't need to shiver to see the sights!

  • Upgrade Your Neoprene: If you’re still diving in that 3mm shorty from July, it’s time to switch. A well-fitting 5mm or even a 7mm full suit makes a world of difference.

  • Hoods are Heroes: You lose a massive amount of body heat through your head. Adding a simple neoprene hood or a hooded vest underneath your wetsuit is a game-changer for warmth.

  • Go Dry: Want to really beat the chill? Winter is the perfect time to get Dry Suit certified. We have courses running this month. Imagine getting out of the water completely dry and warm!

Don't let the "winter" scare you off. Come by the shop, let's talk about your thermal protection layers, and get you out to see the reefs in high-def.
