Shark Awareness Day (July 14): Dive with Sharks & Help Conservation
Lori Sauer Jul 01, 2025
Did you know July 14th is Shark Awareness Day?
At Space Coast Dive Center, we think it’s the perfect time to spotlight these often-misunderstood ocean giants and show how divers can help protect them.
Why Sharks Deserve Our Respect — Not Fear
Sharks have roamed the world’s oceans for over 400 million years. As apex predators, they keep marine ecosystems healthy by balancing fish populations and cleaning up the reef.
Yet every year, millions of sharks are killed by finning, overfishing, and bycatch — putting entire ecosystems at risk.
Diving with Sharks: An Experience Like No Other
Diving with sharks isn’t just thrilling — it’s deeply humbling.
Here on Florida’s Space Coast and beyond, divers can encounter species like:
-
Nurse sharks resting on the reef
-
Reef sharks cruising graceful circles
-
The occasional lemon shark in certain areas
Seeing them up close often transforms fear into respect and sparks a passion for conservation.
What You Can Do to Protect Sharks
As divers, we’re in a unique position to advocate for sharks:
✅ Say no to shark fin products
✅ Support responsible dive operators who don’t bait or harass wildlife
✅ Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the sharks’ habitat
✅ Share your shark diving photos to spread awareness
✅ Participate in citizen science projects like SharkBase or eShark
