Manta & Ray Ecology

Experience the Grace of the Ocean’s "Big Wings"

Description: Few underwater encounters are as mesmerizing as swimming alongside a ray. Whether it’s the massive shadow of a Giant Manta passing overhead or the electric blue spots of a lagoon ray, these creatures inspire awe. But do you know the difference between a Mobula and a Manta? Or how to safely interact with a Southern Stingray?

The SSI Manta & Ray Ecology program dives deep into the biology, behavior, and conservation of these mysterious animals. You will move beyond simple observation and learn to identify different species, understand their vital role in the ocean’s health, and learn how we can protect them from extinction.

Why Choose the SSI Manta & Ray Ecology Course?

  • Knowledge Before You Go: This course is the perfect preparation for upcoming dive travel. If you are headed to destinations known for ray encounters (like the Caribbean, Maldives, or Socorro), this knowledge will transform your experience.

  • Flexible & Dry: Like all SSI Ecology programs, this certification focuses on academic knowledge. It can be completed as a "dry" specialty (classroom/digital only) or combined with dives.

  • Digital Learning: Get started immediately with the MySSI App. Complete the materials at your own pace on your tablet or phone.

  • Career Progress: This specialty counts toward your SSI Advanced Open Water recognition and brings you one step closer to the elite SSI Master Diver rating.

What You Will Learn:

  • Identification: Learn to distinguish between major ray families: Stingrays, Eagle Rays, Mobulas, Guitarfish, and Mantas.

  • Safe Interaction: Best practices for diving with rays to ensure your safety and theirs (crucial for destinations with high ray populations).

  • Biology & Behavior: Understanding feeding habits, cleaning stations, and reproduction.

  • Conservation Status: The threats facing global ray populations and how divers can support conservation efforts.

Course Prerequisites:

  • Minimum Age: 10 Years Old

  • Certification: None required for the academic portion (Open to snorkelers and non-divers!).
